FIH Field Certifications

Only the best hockey fields qualify for FIH certification. They are located around the world. By visitng our home page for each member National Association you can see which fields in each country are currently certified.

There are five levels of certification:

  • Category 1 - fields that meet the requirements of top-level international tournament.
  • Category 2 - fields that meet the requirements for international and top-level national competitions.
  • Category 3 - fields that meet the requirements for lower level national, regional and club play.
  • Category 4 - fields with hockey turfs that also having line markings to allow other sports to be played.
  • Category 5 - fields with surfaces primarily intended for football, but also allow basic development hockey activities to take place.

Additionally, the FIH has introduced a new category of certification for fields that have Innovation Category Dry Turf surfaces.

  • FIH Innovation Category Dry Turf Fields - fields shown to have enhanced playing qualities, without the use of water. At present fields with this type of turf are used for national & local competitions (subject to local competition rules).
