The first FIH Hockey Academy Courses held in Asia were deemed a great success!

With the purpose of creating an educated hockey workforce worldwide, the FIH Hockey Academy provides easily accessible education opportunities to the worldwide hockey community in the areas of playing, coaching, officiating and management. This is done in partnership with FIH Continental Federations and National Associations.

The most recent programmes, held in Kuantan, Malaysia, marked the first to be held in Asia since the FIH Hockey Academy was created in 2014. The FIH Hockey Academy and its education partner, the World Academy of Sport, in partnership with the Raja Ashman Asian Hockey Federation-Malaysian Hockey Confederation Academy, hosted the following programmes: a Trainer programme (November 14-16), an Educator programme (November 15-17) and a Level 2 Coaching programme (November 18-21).

The programmes were deemed a success by all involved and had the following positive outcomes:

  • 1 new certified trainer: Siegfried Aikman (NED)
  • 10 new certified educators from eight countries: Arif Ali (HKG), Kariappa Bollepanda (IND), Kim Sang Ryul (KOR), Kowsar Ali (BAN), Lim Chiow Chuan and Tai Beng Hai (MAL), Maggid Abu-Talib (QAT), Nadeem Ahmed and Gulan Gous (PAK), and Nordin Manaff (SIN)
  • 20 new Level 2 Coaches from six countries: Bangladesh, Malaysia, Oman, Qatar, Singapore and Thailand – including, three new female Level 2 Coaches (two from Malaysia and 1 from Singapore)

Each of the programmes combined theoretical and practical sessions. The practical sessions took place at the Wisma Belia Hockey Stadium, alongside the Junior Asia Cup. A prime environment for participants to put their learnings in practice while watching the next generation of elite hockey players compete.

Programmes were run by FIH Master Trainer Simon Jones (ENG), Trainer Mike Joyce (FIH) and trainer trainee Siegfried Aikman (NED).

The outcomes of these programmes were significant for hockey in Asia as well as for the FIH. The cooperation between the Raja Ashman Asian Hockey Federation-Malaysian Hockey Confederation Academy contributed to the success.
