Germany are the most successful nation in the history of the Men’s JuniorWorld Cup, having claimed the title on six occasions and medalling at 11 out of the 12 competitions staged to date. They came agonisingly close to landing their seventh title at the FIH Hockey Junior World Cup Bhubaneswar 2021 competition, with Argentina – a team they defeated in the pool phase – taking a 4-2 victory. It was a bitter pill to swallow, but 2022 European silver medallists Germany will almost certainly be amongst the favourites in Kuala Lumpur. The team recently recorded a superb competition victory on Malaysian soil in the Sultan of Johor Cup, beating South Africa (6-1) and Great Britain (4-3) in the pool phase before storming to a 6-3 win over India in the semi-finals, with Peer Hinrichs and Nikas Berendts both scoring twice. Germany’s opponents in the gold medal game were Australia, who had held them to a 2-2 draw in the pool phase. Again the sides could not be separated in regular time, with the match finishing 0-0 before Germany triumphed 3-1 in the shoot-out. Team captain Matteo Poljaric was named player of the tournament, with Joshua Onyekwue Nnaji being chosen as goalkeeper of the tournament.
