As the countdown begins for the FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup 2025 in Tamil Nadu, the Netherlands Junior Men’s Team is gearing up with renewed purpose and belief to get their hands on the one trophy missing from their glittery trophy cabinet so far — an FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup Title. Head Coach Jesse Mahieu shared his thoughts ahead of the tournament, expressing confidence in his squad’s ability to make history in India.

“A Fantastic Tournament Awaits”

Mahieu expects a thrilling competition featuring the 24 best under-21 teams in the world, and sees India as the perfect stage for world-class hockey.

“It will be a great tournament. Going to India again with the best young teams in the world will be special. Let’s see how far we can get, but I’m sure it will be a fantastic experience for everyone.”

Navigating a Tough Group

Drawn alongside England, Malaysia, and Austria, the Netherlands face a demanding group phase. Mahieu acknowledged the importance of early consistency.

“Our first three opponents will be challenging. After that, we don’t know who we’ll face in the knockout rounds, which means a lot of analysis and video preparation. But I’m confident we’ll adapt as the tournament goes on.”

Chasing the Elusive Title

While the Dutch have a rich hockey legacy, the Men’s Junior World Cup title has remained out of reach, with their four podium finishes thus far in the competition's history bringing them two silver medals and two bronze medals. Mahieu says that hunger fuels the team’s ambition.

“It’s not our first time in India or in an FIH tournament, but we’ve never actually won the Junior Men’s World Cup. That’s our biggest motivation — to aim high as underdogs and get the maximum out of every player.”

Message to Fans

Mahieu also extended a message to the passionate Indian hockey community, recalling his own playing days.

“Indian fans are incredible. They bring noise, colour, and warmth to the stands. I hope many of them come out and create a great atmosphere for all the teams.”

With a balanced mix of skill, discipline, and youthful energy, the Netherlands enter Tamil Nadu 2025 determined to go one step further and etch their name in Junior World Cup history.
