The International Hockey Federation (FIH) is delighted to celebrate the spectacular success of the hockey tournament at the Dutch Special Olympics National Games 2026. Staged on 13-14 June at HC Bloemendaal, the event served as a monumental testament to the global growth and inclusive nature of our sport, bringing together a phenomenal 32 teams and 277 athletes with intellectual disabilities or autism for two days of elite, inclusive competition.
With a total of 112 matches played across eight pristine pitches, the tournament was defined by a fierce sporting commitment, unwavering respect, and sheer joy. This landmark event beautifully mirrors the core values of the FIH and sets a thrilling precedent as the global hockey community prepares for the highly anticipated inaugural FIH Para Hockey World Cup, taking place later this year from 20-24 August in Belgium and Netherlands.
Masterful Collaborative Delivery
An event of this scale relies on exceptional grassroots cooperation. The weekend was flawlessly delivered through a joint collaboration between HC Bloemendaal and MHC HBS. Months of meticulous preparation went into handling complex logistics, competition schedules, and comprehensive participant support to guarantee a structured, world-class, and safe environment.
The seamless on-site operations were powered by a passionate cohort of approximately 150 volunteers, 66 dedicated match officials, and a specialized medical team. Their collective efforts allowed the athletes to take center stage and focus entirely on maximizing their sporting experience.
True Social Connection on the Pitch
Over the action-packed weekend, the athletes demonstrated elite engagement both on and off the field of play. While the matches were fiercely competitive, the overarching emphasis remained strictly on fair play, mutual respect, and community.
Beyond the scorelines, the tournament doubled as a critical social platform for inclusive sport. Many athletes relished the opportunity to cross sticks and reconnect with familiar rivals from past tournaments, while others forged lifelong bonds within the wider hockey family—perfectly illustrating hockey’s power to unite.

An Unforgettable 'Third Half' Celebration
Following the dramatic final matches, the tournament transitioned into a spectacular community celebration. Highlighting hockey's famous social tradition, an informal 'third half' featured music and live entertainment led by popular singer Danny Plezier, providing a relaxed space for athletes, coaches, and fans to celebrate together.
The memorable weekend concluded with a formal awards ceremony and a massive group photograph featuring around 300 proud participants.
Elevating Para Hockey to the Global Stage
The incredible energy witnessed in Bloemendaal offers a vibrant preview of what is to come this August. The Special Olympics National Games play an invaluable role in strengthening hockey's footprint as an all-inclusive sport.
The FIH remains deeply committed to advancing Para Hockey, a format established 14 years ago. This development trajectory will reach a historic milestone in August 2026, when national teams from around the world gather for the first-ever FIH Para Hockey World Cup. Played at HC Myra in Amstelveen, Netherlands, and Louvain-La-Neuve HC in Belgium, the tournament will culminate in thrilling finals hosted in the iconic Wagener Stadium and Belfius Hockey Arena—giving these world-class athletes the premier global platform they deserve.
