USA return to the FIH Hockey Pro League for a fifth successive season and will be delighted for the opportunity to once again pit themselves against the world’s best. A ninth-place finish in the 2022-23 edition of the competition initially meant relegation from the elite Pro League event, being replaced by India, the winners of the FIH Hockey Nations Cup 2022. However, New Zealand’s decision to withdraw from the FIH Hockey Pro League proved to be excellent news for the Americans, who keep their spot amongst the participating nations for this season. The team recently claimed silver at the Pan American Games 2023 in Santiago, claiming wins against Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay and host nation Chile before suffering a painful 2-1 final defeat at the hands of Argentina, just missing out on a ticket to the Olympic Games Paris 2024. The provisional squad named for this season’s FIH Hockey Pro League consists largely of players aged between 18 and 25, with 27-year-old team captain Amanda Golini (née Magadan) and 28-year-old midfielder Ashley Hoffman being the only athletes to have surpassed the 100 caps milestone. They are coached by David Passmore, a man with a fine pedigree who gained huge experience with the England and Great Britain set-up before getting heavily involved in Irish hockey over the past decade.

This season, USA will take to the field for FIH Hockey Pro League ‘mini-tournaments’ in Bhubaneswar (IND), Rourkela (IND), Antwerp (BEL) and London (ENG).

One to watch: Ashley Hoffman. Daughter of 1984 Olympic bronze medallist Brenda Hoffman (née Stauffer), Ashley Hoffman is a high-quality midfielder who is equally comfortable in defence and making a big impact in the attacking lines. At the time of writing, she had played 109 times for her country, scoring 21 goals.
