Netherlands scored twice in the first 10 minutes and held Germany scoreless in the second half to secure their fourth consecutive women's European Nations Cup with a 2-1 victory in Dublin.

By winning Friday's semi finals, both teams had already ensured their qualification for the BDO Hockey World Cup in Madrid next year.

In a rematch of the Athens Olympic Final and 2004 BDO Hockey Champions Trophy final, Netherlands began brightly with two Ellen Hoog goals in the opening 10 minutes had elapsed to jump to a 2-0 lead.

Olympic champions Germany reduced the margin in the 23rd minute with a penalty corner goal to Natascha Keller, but were unable to add another as the Dutch took a 2-1 lead into half time.

Neither team could add to their goal tally in the second half as the Netherlands ensured their fourth consecutive European title.

In the other playoff matches, England thrashed Spain 4-0 to finish third, with Mel Clewlow, Alex Danson and Helen Grant all scoring early in the match to open a comfortable lead. England cruised to victory after half time and Tina Cullen added another near the end of the match to complete an emphatic bronze medal performance.

Home team Ireland were too good in a 4-1 defeated on Ukraine to finish fifth. Ukraine took a surprising lead in the 14thminute but Ireland drew level midway through the first half and then scored three quick goals after half time to coast to victory.

In the battle to avoid last place, Scotland were never troubled and recorded a 5-0 whitewash of France.
