Earlier this year three FIH Hockey Academy Trainers visited Ipoh, Malaysia, during the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, to deliver a series of FIH Hockey Academy programmes to participants from across Asia.

As part of the FIH's Hockey Revolution strategy there is a focus on having the right structures in place to develop a strong workforce by increasing the alignment between the international, continental and national levels of hockey.

The FIH Hockey Academy provides easily accessible education opportunities to the worldwide hockey community in the areas of playing, coaching, officiating and management. FIH is committed to increasing the funding for educational programmes available to ensure the global development of hockey. With that in mind, four FIH Hockey Academy programmes were delivered in Ipoh:

  •        FIH Hockey Academy Trainer Programme (for global Educator Programme delivery)
  •        FIH Hockey Academy Educator Programme (for coach, umpire and Technical Official educators)
  •        FIH Hockey Academy Advanced Umpire Course
  •        FIH Hockey Academy Level 2 Coaching Course

Each of the programmes combined theoretical and practical sessions. The programmes were deemed a success by all involved and had the following positive outcomes:

  • 4 new Academy Trainers
  • 13 new Academy Educators
  • 18 qualified Advanced Umpires
  • 27 qualified Level 2 Coaches

16 nations were represented on these courses, including representatives from Austria, Bangladesh, DPR Korea, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Myanmar, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

The programmes, which focused on development and education, also provided the opportunity to further develop FIH relationships with the Asian Hockey Federation and engage with key contacts from participating nations. The project also presented the opportunity to further promote the Hockey Revolution and demonstrate the FIH`s commitment to developing a high performing sport in Asia.

Feedback from course candidates was extremely positive, with candidates particularly enjoying the learner centred approach of each of the courses.

FIH supports initiatives, like this one, that show the growing reach of hockey and the increasing level of professionalism across the sport as a whole.
