The countdown to the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 has officially begun. Taking place from 15 to 30 August 2026, the tournament will be jointly hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands, bringing together the very best hockey talent from around the globe to compete at the flagship event of the International Hockey Federation (FIH).
Following an action-packed mid-year stretch of elite hockey, featuring intense showdowns in the FIH Hockey Pro League and the FIH Hockey Nations Cups, there have been major movements in the Hockey World Rankings, including a new number one in the men’s rankings! Complete breakdown of the updated rankings can be found below..
Already assured of the title, Belgium’s men produced a heroic effort to come from four goals down and beat Australia 5-4 in a thrilling final match of the FIH Hockey Pro League season in Wavre on Sunday. In the other men’s matches, Spain outgunned Germany 5-2, while India edged second-placed England in a shootout. Meanwhile, women's champions the Netherlands also wrapped up their title-winning campaign in style with a 3-0 victory over Belgium. The result saw Belgium finishing in third place behind Argentina’s women, despite Las Leonas’ 3-2 loss to England. Over in Berlin, Germany’s women wrapped up their tournament with a massive 5-1 win over China to finish in fifth place.
Needing just one more point, Belgium produced a composed performance to beat the Netherlands 2-1 and secure the men’s FIH Hockey Pro League title. Meanwhile, Ireland's 1-0 defeat to China confirmed their relegation from the women's tournament after England had ensured their own survival with a 4-2 win over Spain. In other action, Australia achieved what no other team could this season, taking points off already-crowned women’s champions, the Netherlands, drawing 1-1 and then winning the shootout. There was another shootout in the match between Germany and Argentina’s men, after an eight-goal thriller, with the Germans prevailing, while in the other match of the day, England’s men punished already-relegated Pakistan 7-1.
The global race to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games has its first confirmed men's qualifier in the Belgian Red Lions, alongside hosts USA! Following a stellar, high-stakes victory tonight over the Netherlands, the Belgian men’s hockey team — The Red Lions — have wrapped up the FIH Hockey Pro League 2025-26 title with one match to go. This marks their second time taking the top step on the podium, and their first since 2021.
