Tomas Domene fired in an impressive four goals in his side’s rampant 8-0 win over hosts India in Rourkela as FIH Hockey Pro League action continued on Thursday.
Earlier in the day, the Australian men secured a comfortable 3-0 win over world champions Germany, while the Aussie women were held to a goalless draw by Ireland before taking the bonus point with a shootout win.
(Men’s) Australia 3 – 0 Germany
World champions Germany were comprehensively outplayed by a clinical Australia side, who made it two wins from two in this season’s FIH Hockey Pro League with a commanding 3–0 victory.
The first half belonged to Australia. Dominant in possession from the outset, the home side opened the scoring with just over five minutes left in the opening quarter, prolific drag-flicker Joel Rintala finding the bottom right corner from a penalty corner for his 11th goal in as many matches. The Kookaburras struck again from another set piece in the second quarter, Campbell Geddes rocketing his effort into the net to give the hosts a 2–0 lead – an advantage they carried into the break with little trouble. The stats told the story with the Germans only producing three circle entries in the half compared with Australia’s 13.
The third quarter brought more penalty-corner success for the home side. A scrappy trap was rescued by Rintala, who improvised to steer the ball towards goal, where a swooping Craig Marais was on hand to help it in. Germany created more opportunities in the final period and earned their first penalty corner with four-and-a-half minutes remaining, but the chance went begging as Australia closed out an assured 3-0 win.

Australia’s Lachlan Sharp was chosen as the player of the match and said: “It's massive for our young group. We didn't play the best, how we wanted to play the other day, so to put out a performance here, keep them to zero goals, and I think they had one corner as well, so we defended pretty well, and it's great for the guys going forward."
(Women’s) Australia 0 – 0 Ireland (SO: 4-2)
Ireland’s women threw everything at hosts Australia in Hobart, but ultimately couldn’t find the back of the net, drawing 0-0 and then losing out on the bonus point in the ensuing shootout.
The Irish created the better chances in a fairly even opening quarter, which ended with the sides still deadlocked. They raised the intensity in the second period and, by half-time, had racked up 11 circle penetrations compared with just three for Australia. But they were unable to capitalise, flashing another golden opportunity across the face of goal and then plugging a penalty-corner effort well wide of the target. As a result, the teams remained locked at 0–0 at the half-time break.
After a third quarter that also failed to produce a goal, the pressure intensified in the final period as Australian goalkeeper Zoe Newman was repeatedly called into action, standing firm to deny a determined Irish attack. Australia’s best chance came with three minutes remaining when Greta Hayes launched herself across the face of goal, but her desperate dive couldn’t make the crucial connection. With neither side able to find a breakthrough in the closing stages, the match was forced into a shootout, which was won by Australia for the extra point.

Australia’s Amy Lawton was named player of the match and said: “You can't underestimate them. They're a strong team, and obviously coming into Pro League this season, you can't really look past anyone in the league. So, it was always going to be tough, and we thought about that before the game, but they really kind of put it out to us early.”
(Men’s) India 0 – 8 Argentina
Four goals from Tomas Domene guided his Argentina side to an 8-0 trouncing of India in Rourkela.
After action at both ends, late in the opening quarter, India were awarded a penalty stroke. Harmanpreet Singh’s initial shot was saved by Tomas Santiago and so was the re-award after a review ruled the keeper had moved early. Salt was then rubbed in the wound just a few seconds later when, up at the other end, Tomas Ruiz’s first-touch shot found the top of the net to put Argentina one in front. Tomas Domene then fluffed his initial drag off a penalty corner variation but managed to keep control of the ball, set up a better angle and slot it in for the 2-0 cushion heading into the first break.
A composed Domene slotted in his second in the 20th minute and a horrible defensive blunder from the home side allowed Lucio Mendez to score a runaway goal just two minutes later. Argentina then went five goals ahead when Ignacio Ibarra’s strike from just inside the circle on an acute angle went underneath the keeper on the near post. Now running rampant, Domene pounced on another error to complete his hat-trick for 6-0 in the 26th minute. Nicolas Della Torre then added his name to the scoresheet off a penalty corner in the final minute of the half, to make it 7-0.
India did well to rally in the second half, slowing things right down and doing some damage control. They managed to hold out the Argentinians until the final minute of the match when the ruthless Domene rocketed in his fourth to complete the 8-0 rout.

Tomas Domene was named player of the match for Argentina and said: “My team played the whole game at 100 per cent and scored some goals because we were a bit disappointed from the last game. We had a lot of opportunities, but we didn't score. Today we scored eight goals, so it’s great and a great win.”
