With the second half of the FIH Hockey Pro League 2024-25 less than a month away we are catching up with players and coaches of all 9 men’s and women’s teams to take the temperature on the first half of their season and explore their targets for the remaining matches. In today’s interview, we speak with Pien Sanders of the defending champions Netherlands women’s team, who currently occupy the top spot in the women’s table…
How do you look back on the first half of the FIH Hockey Pro League season?
I think we were able to get a lot out of the first half of the season. We played very good matches but also lesser matches with unfortunately losing points. Many young players made their debuts and got playing minutes. And we played for the first time under new national coach Raoul Ehren.
Was it difficult to recharge after winning Olympic gold?
After the Olympics we got extended time off. That was necessary for a while. But after the summer we started with a completely new staff and national coach and that still brings new stimuli which keeps you hungry and curious about the matches. So, I was looking forward to starting again.
What are your expectations for the upcoming FIH Pro League matches?
It is very nice that we are playing in front of our own crowd. That is always a big celebration in the Netherlands. China and Australia are also tough opponents. You saw that during the Olympics. I am curious how we will play against them now and what the matches will look like. I expect it to be another tactical game. We are all looking forward to it and hope for full stands. I look forward to seeing all the fans in the Wagener Stadium again in June! We are grateful for the beautiful celebration they always make of it!
Are you already looking forward to next year's FIH Hockey World Cup Belgium and the Netherlands?
The World Cup is always ‘in big letters’ in the calendar of course, but everything is done step by step. First - after the FIH Pro League - this summer the European Championship. I am also looking forward to that, so hopefully I will be there!
